About this scene
In the picture, Mary rides a donkey while Joseph walks beside her with a staff, following a winding road toward a small town on the hill. The Gospel of Luke says Joseph and Mary traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem for the census before Jesus was born; it doesn’t say how they traveled, so the donkey is a familiar detail from the illustration rather than from the text.
